CSI

EpisodeThe Myths and The Truths
Scuba Doobie- DooMyth-“Fire authorities in California found a corpse in a burnt out section of forest while assessing the damage done by a forest fire. The deceased male was dressed in a full wet suit, complete with dive tank, flippers, and face mask. A post mortem examination revealed that the person died not from burns but from massive internal injuries. Dental records provided a positive identification…On the day of the fire, the person went for a diving trip off the coast-some 20 miles away from the forest. The firefighters, seeking to control the fire as quickly as possible, called in a fleet of helicopters with very large buckets. The buckets were dropped into the ocean for rapid filling, then flown to the forest fire and emptied. You guessed it.”- Truth- The helibuckets openings are too small to pick up a scuba diver. A good story, but it's never happened.

Two and A Half DeathsMyth-Using tampons soaked in alcohol to get high. Truth- Apparently, it's possible and could be happening. The reasons this is tried is to possibly not have a hangover, avoid the bad breath, and possibly avoid vomiting. hmmm.

Revenge Is Best Served ColdMyth- A few drops of Visine in a drink or in food can lead to diarrhea, illness and even death. Truth- While it can injure and threaten the lives of small children, but, as a rule, adults who ingest it should not get very sick. There have been exceptions, however....An adult Whole Foods customer had a smoothie spiked by a clerk and became violently ill. Just in case, don't do it!

Burden of ProofMyth- A person can use a meat bullet to kill someone without leaving a trace.
Truth - The meat bullet would fragment on contact with the skin, causing only superficial damage. Even frozen the meat bullet would fail as it would most likely thaw before ever leaving the barrel.

Working Stiffs
Myth - A thief can drill into a safe with a thermal lance, fill the safe with water, and detonate an explosive inside without damaging the items inside or prematurely activating the glass relocker.
Truth - The heat from the thermal rods would completely destroy most items inside. Secondly, if the safe is not watertight it would have to be sealed from the inside in order to completely fill it with water. Finally, even though the explosion could successfully dislodged the safe door, any items not destroyed by the heat from the thermal rods would most likely not survive intact.

AppendicitementMyth - A hillbilly was blasted 200 feet (60 meters) out of a culvert when he tried to light gasoline in an attempt to chase down a raccoon which had wandered down the pipe.
Truth - The hillbilly would simply light on fire when the gasoline was ignited.
