What's New With CSI?

April 30
Will Marg Helgenberger leave 'CSI'

Marg Helgenberger, the actress who plays forensic scientist Catherine Willows on 'CSI', told TV Squad today that her contract on the show is up after 10 years and that she hasn't yet been asked back for next season.

"My contract is up actually," Helgenberger said, when asked if she would be returning for 'CSI's' 11th season. "That's a good question. I haven't been asked back, so we'll see."

Helgenberger's character was recently promoted to supervisor after the departure of her long-time partner, Gil Grissom (William Peterson). She has been with the show since it's debut in 2000.

There have been a few notable cast departures recently on 'CSI' -- among them, Peterson, who left last season to pursue more stage roles, and Jorja Fox, who left the show only to return in a recurring capacity this season. Helgenberger faces frequent rumors that she is leaving the show, though last year's contract renewal wasn't announced until mid-May.

Laurence Fishburne (Getty) The leader of the "CSI" team will stay in charge for another season.

Laurence Fishburne has renewed his deal to remain on CBS' veteran crime drama "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." The agreement will extend the Emmy-winning star's commitment to the show through the 2010-11 season.

In the upcoming Season 10 finale, Fishburne will face off against two serial killers in a battle of wits that will conclude in a life-and-death cliffhanger.

One villain is played by Matt Ross ("Big Love") in a guest-starring role. The other is Bill Irwin, who reprises his role as Nate Haskell, the Dick and Jane Killer. Also in talks to guest star in the finale, veteran actor Marty Ingels.

Fishburne, who's repped by Paradigm and Landmark Artists Management, took over for William Petersen two seasons ago in one of the richer casting deals on TV. Ross is repped by ICM and Framework; Irwin by Innovative and Viking.

With Fishburne front and center, the CBS Prods. and Jerry Bruckheimer series has continued to be a solid performer for CBS on Thursday nights, anchoring its 9 p.m. hour.

During the summer, Fishburne will appear in Robert Rodriguez's highly anticipated "Predators" reboot and next year will appear in Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion." He also will be starring onstage in "Thurgood" in Washington and Los Angeles.

Question: I would ask if you knew if Jorja Fox was going to re-sign with CSI, but the chances of getting an answer are slim to none, right? – ALS
Ausiello: Slim to none…yes and no. I have an answer for you, but it’s sorta “nebulous.” “Jorja and I haven’t sat down and talked about next season,” E.P. Carol Mendelsohn tells me. “But [she's] definitely in the finale, and since the finale is a ‘to be continued,’ I would say it’s a pretty good bet that Jorja will be back for at least some or all of next season. It’s been great having her with us this season.” Question: A rumor has been circulating about the CSI season finale regarding Catherine Willows’ fate. Any scoop on that? —Ann

Petersen & Sinise Attend To Steppenwolf Gala

The Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 2010 Gala will take place on May 8 in Chicago, Illinois. The event will kick off with a selection from Samuel Beckett’s Endgame featuring former CSI: Crime Scene Investigation actor William Petersen (Gil Grissom). After the Gala, Gary Sinise (CSI: New York’s Mac Taylor) and his Lt Dan Band will perform. One of the prizes up for bid at the event’s live auction is a trip for four to the sixth annual CSI: NY Mid-Season Bash hosted by Sinise (including a private tour of the set, hotel stay and round-trip airfare).

A tale of two great actors, the human factor, and a humdinger twist. Case in point: An incident at Trattoria Gianni in Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre district Wednesday night involving actors William "CSI" Petersen and John Malkovich. •The scene: A young woman in a red hat quietly walks into the Trattoria bar for a nightcap and spots a table occupied by Petersen, who's appearing in Steppenwolf's "Endgame," and Malkovich, a Petersen pal who is a leading member of the august Steppenwolf ensemble. •The script: The petite blond walks over to the table and tells the men, "I am a huge fan," thanks them for chatting with her, says good night, leaves the restaurant, crosses the street, where a cab hailed by her husband is waiting, and gets hit by a car. •The upshot: Petersen, dressed in capri pants and sandals, runs to her side, gets down on his knees, puts her little red hat under her head to comfort her and whispers to her until paramedics arrive. Malkovich, who has been watching streetside with the rest of the cast, gets in the ambulance to comfort her. "He felt this could have been his daughter, who is about the young woman's age," said a Sneed source. •The backshot: The woman, Courtney Boho Marincsin, suffered a leg injury and was rushed to Illinois Masonic Hospital. "The driver of the car stopped and got out to help, but it was Petersen who dashed headlong into the street to really help and calm her," the source said. "One of her red heels was smashed on the street." •More backshot: "She was darling and very respectful and really sweet," said Trattoria owner Gianni Delisi. "She wasn't a total stranger to us. But we didn't know her name. It was so sad because she had been so excited to meet [Petersen and Malkovich], who are great guys. And then she heads outside and quickly gets hit by a car." ADAM: Executive producer Carol Mendelsohn assures us that she broaches the subject every time she sees William Petersen. But George Eads isn't hopeful. "I wouldn't count on anyone seeing him ever again," he says. "Just knowing him the way I do and knowing the way he left — it was such a wholesome and gracious and sweet goodbye. I try to light the torch in his honor. ... Some of [Nick's] drive and dedication is: What would Grissom do?" Petersen, by the way, isn't talking

William Petersen

Today's Chicago Woman proclaimed their "Man of the Month" to be William Petersen
and did a great interview. Here are his verbatim interview responses:

The former CSI star, a Steppenwolf Ensemble Member since 2008 who has appeared in the theater’s productions since 1980, takes the stage this month in Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, playing blind wheelchair-bound Hamm.

The guys at Steppenwolf, they’re all friends of mine for 30 years. We grew up together. In Endgame, I’m on stage with Martha (Lavey) and Fran (Guinan). We’ve talked about different things to do and we’ve never, for any number of reasons, had a chance to actually do the same thing at the same time. So by having this, it’s perfect…I would like to work with some of the younger group. They’re going to need an old man in some show at some point. I’ll be the guy.
Oddly enough, I don’t have any regrets. Obviously – I should never have any, because I’ve lived a charmed life. I’ve really had the best of all of it. I don’t really spend much time with guilt or regret.
I’ve read some things (film scripts) and looked at some things. It’s kind of nice. I’m starting all over again. I’ve torn the sheet off the canvas. I remember opening night of American Buffalo, at Remains (Theatre). The play’s about a buffalo head nickel, and opening night, Kevin Hurley came on stage – he’s supposed to show me the nickel and he didn’t have it. All of the sudden you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I cannot believe you didn’t bring the nickel. The play is about the nickel.’
There’s something about being released each evening in the theater from your character. In film or television, until the project is completed, each day you’re always a part of that character. In theater, you get ready to go, you tell your story, the audience applauds – hopefully - and they go home, you go home and you’re not that guy anymore. I don’t have to be Hamm at 11 o’clock at night, whereas there were times when I had to be Grissom [his character in CSI] at 11 o’clock at night. The worst thing for actors, and for anybody really, is fear. So you do the things that you do so as to not open the door to the ghosts and the gremlins.
When I’m in Chicago, I have to have a taste of Italian beef. Usually we go some place for deep dish. And the Cubs, the Blackhawks, whatever I can. Although when I’m doing a play…I try not to go to the Blackhawks or the Bulls. I don’t want to be screaming at some team, then come into the show the next day and not have a voice. With the Cubs, I’m fine, because you don’t have to cheer that much.
The Internet keeps you from dealing with people, actually. There’s people with 7,000 Facebook friends. What does that mean? It means you don’t have any friends, to me. I want to be in the room. Same thing with the theatre. I’d rather be in the room than be on tape.
An actor is never quite sure about his identity anyway. You have no idea, really, which I think is why we’re actors. Too much thinking is a bad thing. Television and theatre are very different. They work very different muscles and they’re very different emotions …it’s different in every way. There’s nothing quite as good as being able to tell a story from beginning to end in the same evening, whereas in television and film you never tell the story chronologically. So there’s a release in the theatre and there’s a completion that you feel each night that is more rewarding than the endless thing of television where you’re never sure if you’re done or you’ve done it right. I never watched [CSI] after a while. Once the show was doing well, you’re in a vacuum about all of that. Whereas the actor in the theatre is obviously, or literally, touching the audience.
For each production, I develop a different sort of pattern and program. As you get older, I think the preparation is a little more intense. I try to stay in kind of the same routine…what happens is, you end up living a fairly ‘monk-like’ life when you’re in the theatre and you do your routine and your vespers. It’s interesting, because it’s just the opposite of what I had to do when I go to the TV show. I just show up there and you have about a page and a half of dialogue each scene and I’d look at it just seconds before we shoot it so that it wouldn’t be stale. It got to the point where there was no preparation needed on the television show. Because it was like living your life. You don’t think about it when you’re living your life.
I’m in Chicago for work and I’m back here [in Los Angeles] because [my wife and I] have a life here, too. It’s nice to be out here. We were fortunate; we have a place that’s not to far from the theatre in Chicago. Both of our families are still in Chicago, so probably a third of the is year here a third of the year there and a third of the year somewhere in-between.
I’ve got a million [memories of growing up in Chicago]. I loved getting on the EL up in Evanston when I was a kid and going down to Wrigley. I was with some of my friends from grade school a couple years ago and we were talking about how we really were the last group of kids that got to grow up on our own. We got to ride our bikes all over town, we got to get on ELs when we were 11 on our own, go down to baseball games, go to Northwestern football games, sneak in. There wasn’t the paranoia that the country has now in terms of children. I was the last of six, so I think they [my parents] were tired of keeping track of me, anyways. I just remember a great deal of freedom in Chicago and it carried on into my high school years, which is why I had sort of a checkered high school, like, ‘Well, I’m just going to go do something else. I’m in Chicago, man, I’m not going to sit in this room all day.’
I remember going to see Sound of Music when I was 12 [in Chicago]. That was really what (tipped) me to the theatre.
On finding anonymity: L.A. is actually the best place. Either the people in L.A. are too cool to make a fuss, or want to be too cool, or else they’re just bored with it, the celebrity thing. It’s not uncommon to bump into people at the grocery store. Somebody will say at the checkout counter, ‘Really loved your show,’ and then you’re gone. It’s obviously a different thing in Chicago or any of the smaller places around the country. I go up to visit my daughter in Boise, Idaho and if I walk into a restaurant there that’s pretty much what the restaurant is about that night. There’s not much you can do about it when the television show [CSI] is that huge. The show was huge in Paris. We were in Paris before Christmas and I had to, like, run in Paris. I thought I was one of The Beatles.
On his oddest fan experiences: I have plenty now because I do the plays. They come from all over Europe to see the play. Their whole vacation will be built around coming to Chicago, getting tickets at Steppenwolf or the Victory Garden, and spending a week seeing the show six, seven times. Then sometimes they’ll wait in the back and some of them I have been aware of for years. It’s a little odd for me. I think there’s some people who end up being celebrities who just spent their life waiting to be a celebrity, so they have a different way of dealing with it. I didn’t and so...I’ve gotten use to it, but it’s never very comfortable. You just don’t know what the point of it is.

A very short review of Endgame on Time Out Chicago
contains this line:
"As Hamm, Petersen acknowledges the suggestion of his character’s name without overdoing it, exercising his range in ways that neither his TV years nor his recent outings in Dublin Carol and Blackbird allowed."
The rest of the review is located at:

Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune did a review of Endgame,
"The right sort of grimness to spur the imagination"

Trying to interpret Samuel Beckett's absurd classic "Endgame" the subject of the latest Steppenwolf Theatre production to star the new and very game ensemble member William Petersen, is both an irresistibly juicy exercise of the mind and a total fool's game.

How About the Rest of the Cast?

April 30
Marg Helgenberger was
interviewed on the Early Show:

NEW YORK, April 29, 2010
Marg Helgenberger’s Decade on “CSI”

Actress Marg Helgenberger Reflects on CBS Drama’s History, Looks Forward to Future
(CBS) Ten years ago, actress Marg Helgenberger stepped out on the original set of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” as Catherine Willows. Now, the CBS drama has a decade of top ratings behind it, and Helgenberger has won two Emmys for her role as Catherine Willows. Helgenberger stopped by “The Early Show” this Thursday to discuss the progress of “CSI.” Although she has filmed over 220 episodes, Helgenberger remains enthusiastic about her work. “I never lose sight of how fortunate I am to have this job, and not just in this economy, but just as an actor,” said Helgenberger. “This is one of these jobs that very few actors get the opportunity to be on — a show that’s had this kind of a run, but also still maintained its quality. And that I attribute to a wonderful group of writers, directors, crew, cast — just the sum of its parts. And we all still care about it, sincerely care about it.” The “CSI” crew welcomed Laurence Fishburne last season, and Helgenberger said Fishburne has been “just great.” “I was so excited when he was cast because I’ve been a big fan of his for a quite a long time, and he just really was undaunted by stepping into Billy Petersen’s shoes — as he should be — he’s certainly earned all of his merit,” said Helgenberger. “He’s seen every single episode. Actually, he watched every single DVD collection — I can’t claim that. And he’s just fun, and easy, and cool, and all that.” While on the topic of cast relationships, “Early Show” co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez asked if the flirting between Helgenberger’s character and Detective Vartann might grow into a full-blown affair. “Knowing ‘CSI’ the way I know ‘CSI,’ no,” said Helgenberger. “We do things in a very subtle way. I could be wrong, but I’m thrilled that we have a love interest on the show. I’ve sort of been begging for one for a few seasons now. They were finally like, ‘Okay, we’ll let you have a little fun.’” When not acting, Helgenberger advocates for breast cancer care and prevention. “My mother, Kay Snyder, is a 30-year breast cancer survivor, and I’ve done so many charity, fund-raising events for the past 20 years,” said Helgenberger. “On May 8, I’m co-hosting the Revlon Walk for a Cure in Los Angeles. I think the one in New York is this weekend. It’s kind of a big deal throughout the country, so I encourage people to go out and participate.” Now that the “CSI” cast has wrapped this season’s filming, Helgenberger said she’s working out summer travel plans with her son. Robert Hall spills about life in the lab

Although he admits to never being a “science person” in college, Robert David Hall was hired for the fifth episode of the first season of CSI, just for one quick scene with show star William Petersen. Hall clicked with Petersen, the guy who played the regular coroner didn’t work out, and 10 years later, Hall is still uttering 10-syllable words and giving meaningful glances over corpses as medical examiner Dr. Al Robbins on the popular CBS drama. “All I can tell you is thank God I’m an actor and not a coroner,” says Hall, who loves that producers have let Robbins grow and even be a little quirky over the years. I talked with Hall, 62, to get some scoop about CSI secrets viewers don’t usually see for a feature in last week’s magazine, and we had a fun chat about the show and his role on it.

George Eads was interviewed about his character,
Nick Stokes, and how he sees him evolving:

Carol Mendelsohn says the show will increasingly take opportunities to dig further into Nick's personal life. But Eads says that viewers shouldn't expect to necessarily go home with his character.

"Through his work situations, I think they'll get to know him better," Eads says. "When you're talking about getting to know people personally, you're starting to dive into their personal relationships or the way they like their eggs in the morning, which in the end isn't really what this show is. I don't know if we'll ever really see Nick on a date or cooking dinner for a girl at his house."

We will, however, see Nick's softer side again as he begins to work with some displaced children later this season. "I told the writers that I'd like to see Nick have to deal with a displaced child," Eads says. "Maybe there will be a future in there because he's more or less single on the show with no kids. He's completely dedicated to work, which is noble. But at the same time, I think he's craving that [family]."

Eads says being able to play the intensity and the tender moments have added to his character's growth throughout the series. "This character has had a maturation process over the entire decade," he says. "Now he sits at the adult table for dinner. He's experienced and just more wise and mature.

"Nick's emerging as a bit of a hero," Eads says. "He's continuing to dive into dangerous situations, like kicking in the door of Dr. Jekyll's torture dungeon, but he's also softening and taking a child that's crying and offering him candy. He's got a lot of endearing qualities. It's fun to play a heroic character that has no fear."

Romance on CSI

According to executive producer Carol Mendelsohn, an upcoming episode of CSI titled “The Panty Sniffer” will find the team helping the LVPD in a stakeout to take down some major Ecstacy pushers. The episode will also feature some personal time between leading lady Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and another character familiar to CSI fans. “Catherine will spend a good part of the episode in a hotel room with Detective Vartann (Alex Carter),” Mendelsohn told TVGuide.com. “We’ve already established a little flirtation between them in a prior episode, and although it’s not very CSI, yes, there is a kiss.”
